Gladys Bancroft, L.P.N.
...retired from Tewksbury Hospital; age 92
TEWKSBURY - Gladys (Penney) Bancroft, L.P.N., age 92, a lifelong resident and the last senior
member of two well known Tewksbury families, died Wednesday evening at the Wentworth
Skilled Care Center in Lowell. She was the wife of the late James W. Bancroft, who died in
1985.
She was born in West Andover, Oct. 11, 1912, a daughter of the late Edward and Kathleen
(Sullivan) Penney. She was raised on the “Penney Farm” on Fiske Street, and attended the Ella
Flemming and Foster Schools. She graduated from Lowell High School in 1930, as Tewksbury
did not offer secondary education to its students. She matriculated to the Tewksbury Hospital
School of Nursing and earned her L.P.N. Degree in 1950. She worked at Tewksbury Hospital as
an L.P.N. until her retirement in 1975.
She was a lifelong communicant of St. William’s Church, and in her later years was active in the
Tewksbury Golden Age Club.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Arthur Brothers of Tewksbury, with
whom she made her home; four grandchildren, Margaret M. and her husband Michael Sawicki of
Pelham, NH, Timothy P. and his wife Kathleen Brothers of Stratham, Nh, Thomas J. and his wife
Lisa Brothers of Wilmington, Michael S. and his wife Janet Brothers of Lowell; ten great
grandchildren, Michael, Erin, Daniel, Brendan, and Caitlin Sawicki, Ryan, Colleen, Colin, Dylan,
and Michael Brothers, and Cassidy Day; numerous beloved nieces and nephews in the Penney and
Bancroft families.
She was also sister of the late Sadie Judge, Katherine Carney, Edward, William, Lyman, and
Everett Penney.
Her Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Nov. 13, in St. William’s Church, Tewksbury. Burial was in Tewksbury Cemetery.
