Obituary

Lucille O. Merkman, 54, of New Bedford died unexpectedly at home on Friday May 30, 2014.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Howard F. and Montine (Powell) Merkman, she lived in New Bedford all of her life. She was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church.

Lucille was employed as a clerk in the business office of the Fall River Public School Department.

She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and the College of Charleston.

She was a member of the Susan A. Sullivou Temple 94, the Y.W.C.A., the N.A.A.C.P., and the New Bedford Historical Society.
She enjoyed traveling, going to Foxwoods, and spending time with her granddaughters.

She is survived by three children, Nakia Merkman and her boyfriend Jason Turner, Jordan Merkman and his girlfriend Jessica Bento, and Joshua Merkman, all of New Bedford; her siblings, Seymour Merkman of New Bedford, Ronald Merkman of East Freetown, Arthur Merkman of Connecticut, Annette Grant of South Carolina, and Connie DeBarros of Falmouth; four granddaughters, Kyla Lopes, Deja Lopes, Janiya Turner, and Anelise Merkman; her aunt, Lucille Goodine of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 11 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, with visiting hours on Friday morning from 9-11 AM prior to the service. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
