Richard W. “Dick” Canwell, age 72 of Brockton, died Tuesday, May 27, 2014. He was the former husband of Marcia Canwell also from Brockton. Born and raised in Maine, he was the son of the late John and Isabel (Brown) Canwell.
Dick graduated from Stephens High School and immediately after high school, joined the U.S. Navy. He was a Sonar Technician in the Navy during the late 1960’s aboard the U.S.S. Goodrich. He was responsible for keeping sonar systems and equipment in good operating condition and also responsible for underwater surveillance and search-and-rescue operations. After receiving an Honorable discharge from the Navy, he began a career in Construction. Having spent most of his life in construction, he slowed down a bit and began working as a truck driver delivering lumber until he retired.
Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially cooking. He was a big fan of country music, enjoyed wildlife and loved watching comedy shows.
He is also survived by his children Derek Canwell of Brockton; Danielle Flaherty of Milford; and Terry Canwell, Lorie Canwell and Richard Canwell Jr. all formerly of Brockton; his siblings who reside in Maine, Randy Canwell; Maurice Canwell and his wife Susan; Timothy Canwell and his wife Dawn; and Carole (Canwell) Freeman and her husband William. He was also the brother of the late John Canwell and Virginia Buotte.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home at a time to be announced. Burial will be in Maine where Dick was born and raised. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in Dick’s name to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.
