Dorothy E. (Vaughan) Schmidt, 89, of Van Buren, died May 14, 2014, at Marion General Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Greenville, S.C. She was the first female to letter in a sport at Greenville High School. She graduated from Furman University and did her graduate studies at Ball State University. She taught 20 years for Alexandria Community Schools at the former Orestes Elementary School before retiring in 1977.
She moved to Lake Placid, Fla., after retirement where she was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She enjoyed and excelled as a golfer. She was an avid runner and jogged three miles every day until November of 2013. She would hit 100 golf balls each evening. She loved traveling to Great Smoky Mountains and Upper Peninsula of Michigan. At age 87, she hiked trails in the Smoky Mountains.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi; Indiana Retired Teachers Association and Lady Elks.
Survivors include her son, Ed “Jack” (Audrey) Schmidt of Van Buren, Ind.; two daughters, Beth (Jerry) Cravens of Anderson and Mary (Eric) Tankersley of Muncie; her faithful companion, Daisy Mae; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, William David Vaughan; her mother, Ruth (Hudson Hodgins; and her husband, Edward Anthony Schmidt, whom she married Feb. 15, 1945, died in 1993.
A graveside service will be held.
