Pastor Juan Bautista Phillips age 72 of Avon, formerly of Milton, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Rosalia (Gonzalez) Phillips for over 40 years. Born and raised in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Pastor Phillips had been a resident of Avon since 1997; arriving in New York in 1962 before settling his family in the greater Boston area.
Pastor Phillips was an ordained Baptist minister who had been associated with Emmanuel Baptist Churches, and other church organizations. In addition to his ministry, he had been a machinist by trade, working at Symmons Industries in Braintree, Phillips Company in Stoughton, and Boston Gear in Quincy throughout his long career. Pastor Phillips will be remembered as a decisive, hardworking, strong, quiet man, with a large heart, who was devoted to his family, friends, community, work, and ministry.
In addition to his wife, Pastor Phillips is survived by his seven children: Eduardo Martinez of Avon, Patricia A. Martinez of Florida, Luis A. Martinez of Avon, Juan B. Phillips, Jr. and wife Danielle of Brockton, Isaac Phillips of Avon, Sidney Phillips of Avon, and Vivian A. Phillips of Avon. He leaves ten grandchildren, and was the brother of Josefina Phillips of New York, Luis A. Phillips of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Dora A. Phillips of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic and the late Victor M., Sidney T., and Lorenzo Phillips.
Visitation will be held at Congregation of Leon Judah 68 Northampton St., Boston, MA 02118 on Thursday from 6:30 - 9:30 pm. His Funeral Service will be held in the church on Friday at 10-11 am. Burial will follow at Milton Cemetery. Pastor Phillips’ family requests that donations in his memory be made to a family member towards a memorial in his birth place of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic.
