Obituary

Alton Sylvia, 85, of Dartmouth died May 14, 2014 at home after a prolonged illness surrounded by his family and friends. He was the husband of Mariette Y. "Jerry" (Ciacci) Sylvia.
Born in Dartmouth, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Moniz) Sylvia, he lived in Dartmouth all of his life.
Mr. Sylvia was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Dartmouth.
He was formerly employed as a meat cutter at Dartmouth Food Center for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Sylvia served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and grandchildren as well as woodworking having built the home his family lived in.
Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Michael Sylvia and his fiancée Paulina Fernandes, Peter Sylvia and Danny Sylvia and his fiancée Yn Kim, all of Dartmouth; 5 grandchildren, Rebecca Loftus and her husband John, Sean Sylvia, Justin Sylvia, Jessica Fernandes and Jeannette Fernandes; 3 great-grandchildren; and 2 nieces, Barbara Sylvia and Susan Jacobson.
He was the brother of the late Elvira Moniz and the uncle of the late Nancy Cabral.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 17th at 10 AM in St. Mary's Church. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 16th from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Overlook VNA 41 State Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02747.
