Obituary

MOORE, Barbara Johnson 84, of Lexington - Mother, grandmother, wife, and friend - passed away peacefully in her home on March 10th, having survived pancreatic cancer for over a year. Born December 29, 1929 and raised in Winchester, MA, Barbara attended Smith College, graduating with honors in 1951. There she met her life partner, the late H. Bigelow Moore, whom she married that same year. Eventually settling in Lexington to raise their four children, they were active residents of the town over the nearly 60 years they lived there. Barbara was known to many in the community for her role first as a teacher, and later as director of the Methodist Weekday School, where she worked for 34 years. Her interest, skill, and dedication to early childhood education is perhaps her greatest legacy. She was committed over the many years to the activities of Lexington’s Hancock United Church of Christ. Barbara was also spiritually invested in the Newfound Lake region of New Hampshire; her lifetime of experiences up north gave her both perspective and comfort. She is survived by her four children: Richard (Concord, MA); Rebecca Galvin (Burlington, VT); Steven (Arlington, MA) and Roger (Dorchester, MA). In addition, she leaves five grandchildren; Alex & Nikki Moore, and Ben, Jesse, and Emma Galvin. We all will deeply miss her dignity, grace, humor, integrity, and compassion. A memorial service will be held at the Hancock United Church of Christ, 1912 Massachusetts Avenue, in Lexington, MA on May 30th, at 2:00 in the afternoon; please consult Casper Funeral Services for details. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Barbara J. Moore Scholarship Fund, c/o Methodist Weekday School, 2600 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA 02421.
