SPRINGFIELD, MA – Dudley Shell, 95, of the Hill McKnight section of Springfield, Massachusetts was Called Safely Home on Friday, May 2, 2014. He passed into Eternal Life at the East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Meadville, Mississippi on December 6, 1918, a beloved son of the late Albert and Lizzie (Wethersby) Shell. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. He later transferred to the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean War. His last duty assignment, in 1960, brought him to Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts where he retired in 1962 after over 20 years of military service to his country, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his military service, he was employed for many years as a security guard at the former F. W. Sickles Company in Chicopee and the former Albert Steiger Company on Main Street in Springfield. He was a longtime member of the Hill McKnight Community Watch Group in Springfield. He leaves his beloved wife of 59 years, Eleonore M. N. (Rascher) Shell; his loving children, Beatrice Shell and her partner, Charles J. Solomon, of Stone Mountain, GA, Walter Shell of Belchertown, MA, and Lizzie N. Armstrong of Severn, MD; his four cherished grandsons, Christopher, Michael and David Shell, and Evan Armstrong; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended members of the Shell and Rascher families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his loving daughter, Rosie Lorraine Shell who was Called Home on April 28, 1954; his loving son-in-law, Michael D. Armstrong who was Called Home on March 17, 2010; his dear brother, Albert “Prince” Shell; and his dear sisters, Beatrice White and Mary “Mina” Shell. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Prayer Service on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 beginning at 12 noon at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His burial with US Air Force Military Honors will follow the service at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA 01109.
