DONALD M. GARLAND, M.D. of Duxbury, formerly of Hingham, died on Thursday, Nov. 4th at the Village at Duxbury at the age of 90. Born in Northborough, MA to parents who had immigrated from Scotland in 1912, he attended Braintree Public Schools, graduating from Braintree High School and Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville, Maine. He was graduated from the Unversity of Virginia in 1938 and Tufts Medical School in 1942. He interned at Quincy City Hospital. Dr. Garland married Phyllis Turner in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Army soon after. Dr. Garland served as a Captain in the Medical Corps for three years and was stationed in Carlisle, PA, Chicago, New York City, Washington, DC, and Colorado.
Dr. Garland moved to Hingham in 1946 and set up a family practice at his home on Main Street, served as the famliy doctor for numerous families in Hingham and delivered hundreds of babies until his retirement in 1982. He also served as a medical examiner for Plymouth County. Dr. Garland was on the staff of South Shore Hospital from 1946-1982.
In 1962, Dr. Garland was one of the five founders of the South Shore Medical Center in Norwell, one of the first group medical practices in the Boston area. In 1966, he also joined a group of Hingham-based businessmen in founding the Lincoln Trust Company, now part of Citizens Bank. Dr. Garland retired from practicing medicine in 1982, and he and Mrs. Garland moved to Beaufort, SC to spend winters while spending their summers in Fitzwilliam, NH. They returned to the South Shore in 1996.
Dr. Garland played football and baseball in high school and enjoyed golf, tennis, and boating during his adult life. He was an ardent and lifelong Red Sox fan. He was also a devoted supporter of his alma maters and a generous contributor to many social, educational, medical and environmental causes.
Dr. Garland is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Turner) Garland of Duxbury and his children; Sharon Garland Crampton of Alexandria, VA; Russell M. Garland of Kingston, MA; David M. Garland of Peterborough, NH; and Nancy T. Garland of Watertown, MA.
Also survived by his sister, Annabelle Tisdale of Weymouth, MA and 6 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004 at 11 AM at the Pilgrim Church of Duxbury, 404 Washington St.
