
Alphonse Piela, age 93, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2014 at Wingate of West Springfield surrounded by his family. He was born on April 24, 1920 in Chicopee. He was a son of the late Casimir and Angela (Cinko) Piela. Alphonse worked for Smith and Wesson for many years before he retired. He was a communicant of the former Assumption Parish. He was an avid fisherman, a member of the League of the Sacred Heart and the Chicopee Senior Center. He is predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Gertrude (Bardier) Piela who passed away in 2008. He leaves his daughter Margaret Baptiste and her husband Donald of Palm Beach Gardens FL; his son Michael Piela and his wife Leslie of South Hero, VT, a son-in-law Paul Gariepy and his wife Chris of Whiting, VT; and 3 grandchildren; Donald Baptiste Jr., Darlene Baptiste, and Paul Gariepy Jr.. He also leaves 5 beloved great grandchildren, Stephen, Alyssa, Madison, Harrison and Emily. He is predeceased by his daughter Nancy Gariepy; 3 brothers Joseph, Walter and Max Piela and also by his sister Frances Krawczyk. Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 9 am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Assumption Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
