ROBERT W. GARVIN, of Hingham, retired Deputy Fire Chief, Hingham Fire Department, died suddenly on Wednesday, Nov. 3rd at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was 69. He was born in Weymouth and was a lifelong resident of the Town of Hingham, graduating from Hingham High School in 1954. Mr Garvin then served with the U.S. Army from 1955 - 1963. In May of 1963, he joined the Hingham Fire Department and retired as Deputy Chief in 1991 after 28 years of service.He was active in the civic affairs of the town, serving for many years on the Hingham Housing Authority, and in 1985 was chairman of the Town of Hingham 350th Anniversary Committee. He was a member of the Mass. Cross Country Ski Club and in 1993 hiked the Appalachian Trail. An avid cyclist, Mr. Garvin, along with his many cycling friends, traveled in many areas of the country as well as in Canada.He was the husband of Eileen F. (Burke) Garvin of Hingham and father of Robert W. Garvin, Jr. of Hanover, Lisa A. Holbein of Massillon, OH, Kevin F. Garvin of Hull, Pamela J. Tower of Weymouth and Kathryn M. Veronesi of Middleboro. Brother of Paul R. Garvin of Hingham, Susan M. Selfridge of Derry, NH and Janice M. Seiferth of Daytona Beach, FL. Grandfather of Kevin, Sean and Alycia Garvin of Hull, Jason, Lindsay and Jordan Tower of Weymouth and Nikita Garvin of Hanover. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 8th at 10 AM at the Church of the Resurrection, 1057 Main St. (Rt. 228), Hingham.Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Sunday from 1-5 PM.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, P.O. Box 161150, Austin, TX 78716-1150 or to the Bare Cove Fire Museum, P.O. Box 262, Hingham, MA 02043.The interment will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hingham.
