MYSTIC: Norma L. (Brownell) Schweitzer, 82, died this Wednesday at home under the care of her family. She was the wife of the late Jack P. Schweitzer (USNret).
She is survived by her 2 daughters Jan L. Nurnberger and her husband Philip, and Julie Bairstow of Waterford; one son Mark K. Schweitzer of Mystic; three grandsons, Robert Schweitzer (USAF) of Delaware; Nicholas Bairstow of Ledyard; Benjamin Bairstow of Norwich and two great grandchildren.
She will be sadly missed by her loving sisters, Laura Louis of Gladstone, MI and Phyllis Brownell of Newport, RI and her half-brother George Toelken of Waterford. She was predeceased by her brother Norman Brownell Jr.
Mrs. Schweitzer was born on Aug. 20, 1922, the daughter of the late Norman and Laura (Rodda) Brownell, in Newport, RI, and relocated to Mystic in 1960.
During WWII she helped the war effort by manufacturing torpedoes on Gould Island in Newport.
She worked as a long distance operator for the NY and NE telephone company until she moved to CT.
She was a member of the Mystic VFW Women’s Auxiliary and the Fleet Reserve Auxiliary. She loved Bingo and was a great card player. Norma was an avid reader often reading a book a day.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Tuesday from 5 to 7pm. A graveside service will held on Wednesday at 10am at the Middletown Cemetery, Middletown, RI.
