Sarah Ann Cardinal passed away peacefully, after a short illness, April 10, 2014, surrounded by family, in the home she spent most of her life. Born May 16, 1931 to Philomena and Savario Guzzo, one of six children, her greatest joys were her own nine children and eight grandchildren, all of whom survive her.
Sarah could often be seen tending her garden on Chauncey Street in East Dedham —the same street on which she was born, lived and raised her family and died. A true Matriarch, friends and family knew Sarah as an incredible force of nature, a petite, powerful woman of unlimited will and energy, single-handedly raising her large family, often under the most difficult of circumstances, and firmly guiding them to all lead successful lives. Married to Paul Emile Cardinal (d.1991) for 27 years, she worked at the Dedham High cafeteria and was a volunteer at Avery School, followed by 15 years working in the medical supply manufacturing industry earning many accolades as a top factory producer.
Sarah’s honesty, determination, and devotion to family will always be revered by the many that will miss her, including her children: Don Cardinal (wife Debbie) of Brewster, MA, Jo Anne Anderson (husband Ronald) of Marshfield, MA, Cathy Cardinal (husband Steve Creamer) of Easton, MA, Nancy Puleo (husband Steve) of Reading, MA, Susan Wilcox (husband Michael) of Shrewsbury, MA, Jeannine Iarrobino (husband Frank) of Dedham, MA, Steven (wife Leanne) of Bridgewater, MA, Michelle Cardinal (husband Tim O’Leary) of Portland, OR, and Denise Cardinal of Dedham, MA, and her grandchildren Joshua and Nicole Anderson, Matthew and Cameron Wilcox, Gabriella and Vincent Iarrobino, and Zachary and Christian Cardinal.
A private ceremony was held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., Dedham. Memorials can be sent to Sarah’s favorite charity, the Cardinal Family Scholarship C/O Steven Cardinal, at 120 Bradley Lane, Bridgewater, MA, 02324, which provides scholarships to graduates of Avery School and Dedham High School.
