Daniel J. Callahan, 80, of Woburn, formerly of Winchester, passed away suddenly on April 8, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born and raised in Winchester, he was the loving son of Edward and Mary Ellen (O’Toole) Callahan; the youngest of their seven children. Graduating from Winchester High School in 1953, he then went on to serve his country in the United States Army, being stationed in Germany. Upon his return home, he worked for First National stores for many years and then continued his career working at the Boston Globe, belonging to the Teamsters Local 259. Danny was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and the VFW of Winchester.
Danny loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his coffee crews at Dunkin Donuts in Winchester, Demet’s in Medford, and his Saturday morning Koffee Crew at his niece Betsy’s house. He would always bring Gingerbread Construction Co muffins, which affectionately earned him the nickname “The Muffin Man”.
Uncle Danny was always up for any adventure his family participated in. He was sure to be seen at every family event with a kind word and an infectious smile.
Danny is survived by his sisters Anna Bartlett and Claire Torrice of Woburn and the late Francis Callahan, Gertrude “Sis” Oliver, Edward “Red” Callahan, and Rosemary Caruso. He is also survived by his dear friend Ann Harrington of Braintree, many nieces, nephews and his beloved “Coffee Groups”. Funeral from the Costello Funeral Home 177 Washington St., Winchester on Mon., April 14 at 9AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church 155 Washington St. Winchester at 10AM Visiting Hours will be held in the funeral home on Sunday from 2-6PM. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 259, Knights of Columbus and VFW of Winchester.
