Carl B. Black, 86 of Provincetown passed away Wednesday March 19th at Seashore Point after complications from Parkinsons Disease. He was the husband of Constance Black.
Born in Carbon, West Virginia, he later lived in Fort Lauderdale where he enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He served in the Pacific Theatre during WW II as a Radio Man third class. After discharge he moved to Provincetown and finished his education at Provincetown High School. After graduation, he attended Radio School in Boston. MA and summered in Provincetown. It was here that he met Constance Broadley, who he married September 9, 1950. After radio school they returned to live in Provincetown.
Carl worked as a radio and TV repairman at Jacobs Radio Shop and later at Arnolds. He then went to work as an Electronics teacher and repairman at the North Truro Air Force Base.
Through the years he was an active member of the Beachcomber Club and was involved with his wife in local theatrical activities where they produced one of his plays. Because of these interests, he was mentored by the artist and film writer Kenneth Stubbs, who trained him to write training films for the Naval Photographic Department in Washingon DC. He freelanced for several years before moving to Washington to work for the Navy. He later transfered to Bethesda Naval Hospital working for several more years. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved back to Provincetown.
He especially enjoyed his time as a ham operator and his membership with the Provincetown Pilgrim Radio Club as well as his friends at the Beachcombers and the Art community.
In addition to his wife, Constance Broadley Black, son, Carl David Black of Snow Hill Maryland, daughters Melanie Black of Holyoke MA and Laura Simmons of Euclid, Ohio survive him. He also leaves 5 grandchildren, Douglas David Black of Fredricksburg VA. Sarah Dawson of Riverdale MA, Becky Black, Daniel Black, and Lisa Black of Snow Hill Maryland.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service for Carl, which will be held Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 1:30 pm at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown.
