Obituary

Simon Stava, 65, of New Bedford died Tuesday October 26, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital.

Born in Skudenes, Karmoy, Norway, the son of the late Olav and Perina (Fagerland) Stava and stepson of the late Malena Larsen Stava, he had lived in New Bedford since 1964.

Since 1997, Mr. Stava had been employed as a custodian at the Bristol County Third District Court in New Bedford. He had previously been employed as a commercial fisherman on various fishing vessels out of the Ports of New Bedford, Fairhaven, Seattle, Washington, and Kodiak, Alaska until retiring.

He served in the Norwegian Navy as a submariner, and had also served in the Norwegian Merchant Marine. He was a member of the New Bedford Fishermen's Union and the Retired Fishermen's Club.

Survivors include his close friend, Marie Saunders of New Bedford; a brother, Tolleiv Stava of Karmoy; a sister-in-law, Magnhild Stava of Karmoy; a niece, Merete Stava of Karmoy; two nephews, Per Olav Stava and Marton Stava, both of Karmoy; and an extended family of many friends and acquaintances in the Greater New Bedford area.

He was the brother of the late Bjarne Stava, who was his twin, and the late Johannes Stava and brother-in-law of the late Gerd Stava.

His Funeral Service will be held on Friday October 29, 2004 at 11:30AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. Visiting hours will be on Thursday October 28, 2004 from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in his name may be made to the Mariner's Home, 15 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford, MA 02740.
