Obituary

Kathleen (Gregg) Coyle, Beloved Wife of William E. Coyle and Cherished Daughter of the late William R. and Katherine (Bignall) Gregg, died on Thursday, February 27, 2014. She was born February 20, 1927, in Taunton, MA and attended the Immaculate Conception Grammar School in Whittenton and Taunton High School. After graduation from Taunton High School, she attended Brown University, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. She then taught grammar school in Taunton for five years. She married William E. Coyle in 1953. Her son, Bill, was also born in Taunton, MA, and she later moved with her husband to South Bend and then to Miami, where her son Frank was born. She and her husband subsequently moved to Washington, DC (Falls Church, VA) and then to Pittsburgh in 1964. After entering her two sons in St. Thomas More Grammar School, Kathleen began teaching elementary grades at St. Thomas More and retired after 30 years. Kathleen belonged to the St. Thomas More Women’s Guild for many years while teaching, and was very active in the classroom, well-known for her Irish plays on St. Patrick’s Day where she dressed her children in costumes, and fashioned instruments for them to “play” while singing Irish songs to recorded tunes she made from records. She also took part in a number of plays produced by guild members, and was very popular in her rendition of the accents (usually Irish) which she spoke in the plays. One of her joys was meeting former students and learning about their lives and families since graduation from St. Thomas More School. Kathleen remained active in retirement and belonged to the Book Club at St. Thomas More, which met once a month to review books they have read in the past month. She belonged to a card party that met once a month, but attrition has reduced membership to two or three persons. Although a loyal Pittsburgh sports fan, her allegiance shifted to the Red Sox or Patriots whenever they played the Pirates or Steelers. She will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved her.
