Whitman – Edward B. Mitchell 81, a 40 year resident of Whitman, died unexpectedly Monday February 24 in Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara A. (Newsome) Mitchell.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY he was the son of the late William and Florence Mitchell.
Edward was a talented athlete, playing semi-pro football and having tried out for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy.
For 15 years he had held several positions for Hendrickson’s Dairy and later worked 17 years as an operator for Verizon, aiding the hearing impaired.
He continued his love of sports, watching numerous sporting events on TV and had enjoyed his home computer.
He is survived by his loving children Adam Mitchell of Hanson, Robert Mitchell of CA, Douglas Mitchell and his wife Judy of Halifax, David Mitchell and his wife Deborah of Arlington, Dawn Mitchell of MN, Edward Mitchell and his partner Clair Ziegler of NJ and Kathleen Mitchell Williams and her husband Carl of Germany. He is also survived by his grandchildren Heather, Derek, Alexys, Bradley, Owen, Kevin, Jennifer, and Edward and his great grandchildren Cynthia, Julianne, Nicole and Donovan.
His services will be held Saturday March 1 at 10:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 11 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Friday February 28 from 4-8 PM.
