Fall River – Tobias Flemming, 71, of Westport died Friday, October 22, 2004 at Charlton Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. He was the husband of Elizabeth L. (Pierce) Flemming.
He was born in Nantucket, son of the late Tobias Flemming Sr. and Mary E. (Christopher) Flemming, and grew up in Nantucket prior to moving to Westport over 50 years ago. A 1952 graduate of Nantucket High School, he served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict where he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. Prior to his retirement he worked as a commercial fisherman on various fishing vessels out of New Bedford and also worked for Westport Lobster Company, Westport.
Mr. Flemming was a member of the Westport Lions Club and the U.S.S. Iowa Ship Association. He was a past member of the South Eastern Shellfish Association. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Including his wife, he is survived by a daughter: Patricia M. Sieminski and her husband Robert of Westport; a brother: Francis Flemming of Osterville, MA; 4 sisters: Caroline Corkum of Nantucket, Patricia Malloy of Winthrop, MA, Marcella Cord of North Carolina and Marie Levesque of Merrimack, NH; and 2 granddaughters: Rebecca Byron and Stephanie Sieminski both of Westport.
He was the brother of the late Edmund Flemming and Stephen Flemming.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be from the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport, Monday, October 25, 2004 at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours Sunday 4 – 7 P.M.
Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
