VENTURA
Muriel Anne McGlynn died in the early morning of Tuesday, February 18th 2014. She was 90 years and 9 days old.
Muriel was born February 9, 1924 in San Jose, California to John James McGlynn of San Francisco, and Frances Marie Hughes of Sonora, California. Muriel was a member of the San Francisco Society of Pioneers, as her paternal great grandparents settled in the Sierra Nevada foothills and San Francisco in the 1840s. Her great grandfather, Mark Hughes was the mayor of Sonora. Another great grandfather, John A. McGlynn, was the first Recorder and Auditor of San Francisco.
Muriel had a long career in the roles of both teacher and counselor in elementary, secondary and junior college education. Muriel put aside her teaching career to devote herself to family, returning to education when her children were grown. Striving to help others, Muriel learned Spanish as an adult to work with students in migrant education programs in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
A devout Catholic, Muriel was an active and involved member of Sacred Heart Church in Ventura where she had been a Eucharistic Minister and Reader. She volunteered many hours to assist Seniors, and feed the hungry. Muriel had also served for several years at St Raphael’s Church in Goleta.
Always intellectually curious, Muriel was a voracious reader and engaged student. She received her B.A. from San Jose State University, and an M.A. from Sacramento State University. She was a long-time member of the American Association of University Women and was an officer in the Ventura Chapter.
Muriel loved to travel, and many received her postcards sent from North and South America, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Richard and Mark, and her husband of 34 years, Richard Lee Campion. She is survived by her son Kevin, of Grass Valley, her daughter Maureen, of Oceanside, and daughter Della, of Seattle.
