Gertrude Trowell Burns, 98, of Tifton died Sunday, February 16, 2014, at the Rehabilitation Center of South Georgia. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Rev. Gary Cadwell will officiate with burial to follow in Tift Memorial Gardens. Travis Whitley, Duane Griner, Ray Mullis, Daniel Wyatt, Allen Montgomery and Ed Whitley will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Mixon, Derek Robinson, Mike Kemp, Andy Oliver and David Griner. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Mrs. Burns was born on November 7, 1915 in Homerville and was the daughter of Irvin Trowell and Mattie Trowell, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Veston Burns; one daughter and two sons-in-law, Ellie and Bud Hancock and Clyde Griner; a grandson, Raymond Burns; three brothers, Simon Trowell, Paul Trowell and Alex Trowell; one sister, Effie Trowell Sherrod; and a granddaughter-in-law, Sandy Burns. She was a homemaker and a member of Enigma Baptist Church and attended Vanceville Congregational Christian Church. She loved her grandchildren, gardening, cooking and sewing.
Mrs. Burns is survived by one daughter, Betty Griner of Brookfield; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Laverne Burns of Enigma; six grandchildren and their spouses, Patsy and Johnny Mixon of Tifton, Debbie and Derek Robinson of Tifton, Duane Griner of Keaton Beach, Florida, Sharon and Ray Mullis of Tifton, Donnie Burns of Enigma and Monty and Carolyn Burns of Ty Ty; ten great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great grandchildren.
