Obituary

LONGMEADOW – Leon V. St. Pierre, 89, of Longmeadow, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, February 16, 2014. He passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island on November 30, 1924, a beloved son of the late Victor O. and Alice A. (Gaudreau) St. Pierre. He was raised in Worcester, attended local schools and lived in the city for many years before moving to Longmeadow in 1950. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II with the 85th Infantry 10th Mountain Division and attained the rank of Private First Class. He served in the North Apennines and Po Valley and received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the American Service Medal, a Bronze Star Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and a Purple Heart Medal for wounds he received in action against the enemy. Following his military service, he returned to the area and furthered his education and graduated from the UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture. After receiving his degree, he followed in his father’s footsteps and worked beside him at the Tatnick Country Club in Worcester. Following his move to Longmeadow, he became the Golf Course Superintendent at the former Oxford Country Club in Chicopee. He was employed for 38 years as the Golf Course Superintendent at the Longmeadow Country Club and retired in 1992. He was a past president of the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of New England and a life member of the Golf Course Association of America. For his 47 year commitment to the sport of golf, Leon was inducted into the Western Mass Golf Hall of Fame. Leon was active in the Town of Longmeadow and served for many years as the Tree Warden, the Chairman of the Conservation Commission, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Storrs Library. He was a member of the Allen Bird Club of Longmeadow and a member of the Board of Directors of Historic Springfield Cemetery. Active in his faith, he was a communicant of the former Notre Dame Church in Worcester, Saint Joseph Church in Springfield and currently was a communicant of Saint Mary Church in Longmeadow. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and soul mate, Claire G. (Grenier) St. Pierre who was Called Home on February 18, 1984. They were married on November 11, 1950 at the former Notre Dame Church in Worcester and were blessed with 33 years of happiness together. Besides his beloved wife and parents, he was also predeceased by his cherished granddaughter, Alexandra Moser; and his two dear brothers, Emile St. Pierre and Gerald St. Pierre. He leaves his three devoted children, Andrea C. Marcaurelle of Ipswich, MA, Andrew L. St. Pierre and his wife, Tina, of Longmeadow, and Jeanne M. Moser and her husband, Jim, of East Kingston, NH; his nine cherished grandchildren; his eight cherished great-grandchildren; his dear sister, J. Theresa Stablier and her husband, John, of Wethersfield, CT; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended members of the St. Pierre and Grenier families. His family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. which will be followed by a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His Committal Service with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Cemetery Chapel Mausoleum, 162 Webster Street, Worcester, MA 01603.
