Ruth E. Power, a long time resident of West Roxbury and wife of the late well known Boston attorney, Paul V. Power, died on October 19th after a lengthy battle with bone cancer. Mrs. Power was 87 years of age and passed away at her West Roxbury Home.Born Ruth Eleanor Kelly, Mrs. Power was the daughter of William J. and Mary G. (Crafts) Kelly and was raised in Dorchester. She graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls in 1934 and received her BS degree from Massachusetts College of Art in 1938. During her college years, Mrs. Power worked summers as a camp counselor at area girls’ camps. Prior to her marriage in 1941, she was employed as an art teacher in the Boston School System, the majority of her time at the Timilty School in Roxbury. In 1993, upon her 55th class anniversary from the Massachusetts College of Art, she was awarded an honorary MFA degree. Shortly after her marriage to Paul V. Power in November of 1941, her husband enlisted in the U.S. Navy immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the war, Mrs. Power Lived in Washington, D.C. and Kansas City with her husband but returned to Boston in early 1943 after her husband Paul was transferred to the South Pacific for the duration of the war. As many of her generation did she began raising her family alone. The family moved to West Roxbury in 1953 where she resided for the remainder of her life. Ruth and her husband were active parishioners at St. Theresa of Avila parish in West Roxbury where their five Children graduated from the parish grammar school. Mrs. Power is survived by her five children, Mary G. Desmarais of Dorchester, Paul V. Jr., of Natick, William J. of Marlborough, Michael F. of Walpole and Patricia R. Tierney of West Roxbury. In addition she leaves 12 grandchildren, and the late Paul A. Desmarais and one great grandchild, along with her brother-in-law, Rev. William J. Power, S.J. of Weston. Mrs. Power will be waked at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre St, West Roxbury on Thursday, October 21st from 3-8 pm. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 22nd, 11 o’ clock at St. Theresa’s of Avila Church in West Roxbury.
