Obituary

WORCESTER— Mrs. Helen L. (Nyholm) Coury, 86, of 6 Wachusett St., died peacefully in her sleep at home on Oct. 16, one month shy of her 87th birthday.

Her husband of 57 years, John J. Coury, died on June 30th, 2001.

She leaves an adoring and loving son, John F. Coury, and his wife, Anne, of Canterbury, Conn.;.a devoted and loving daughter, Joanne H. Barth of Worcester, and Joanne's husband, Bud Barth, who loved and cared for Mrs. Coury like his own mother; a niece, Mrs. Tina (Nyholm) Durski of Oxford, who was like a daughter to her; her twin grandsons, Christopher and Jonathan Coury, whom she loved dearly; a nephew, A.C. Durski, who gave her much joy; her caring and devoted friends, especially Mrs. Katherine Swisher of Worcester, who visited regularly, and Mrs. Betty Hanlon of Holden; several other nieces, nephews and cousins, some from Finland; and her many friends and acquaintances at Canterbury Towers apartments, who always inquired about her condition.

A brother, Leonard Nyholm, and three sisters--Elin I. Murdock, Agnes M. Desrosiers, and Alice A. Santora--predeceased her.

Mrs. Coury was born in Worcester, daughter of Carl E. and Ida A. (Carlson) Nyholm, and graduated from Commerce High School. She volunteered many years for several organizations, including the American Red Cross Blood Bank for over 25 years, and the Elm Park Community School, where she helped in the library, for 16 years. She was also a nurse’s aide.

Mrs. Coury, an unselfish and loving woman who always thought of others, was a member of the Marion Guild of St. Paul’s Cathedral, where she also volunteered for many church functions. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and sewing, spent many enjoyable trips to Hampton Beach, N.H., and loved playing cards, bingo, and cribbage.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Oct. 19, from Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Paul’s Cathedral, 38 High St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, at a later date. A calling hour will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Cathedral, 38 Highland St., Worcester, 01609.
