
Judge George G. Pancol
January 1, 1927- February 4, 2014
Judge George G. Pancol, 87, a lifelong resident of Anderson, passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2014.
He was born in Anderson on January 1, 1927, the son of Gus and Penelope Pancol. He graduated from Anderson High School in 1945. He attended Northwestern University, and graduated from Indiana University and Indiana University Law School. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Irene Tzouanakis on June 5, 1949. George and Irene moved back to Anderson in 1953.
George had a law career spanning over 50 years. He started working as an Attorney, before becoming City Court Judge in 1959. He served as public defender, was Judge of County Court I, and most recently, was a commissioner for Judge Thomas Newman Jr.
George has been an active member of the community, having served on the board of the American Cancer Society golf tournament committee, the Anderson Country Club Board of Directors, Member of the Jaycee's, Member of the Madison County Bar Association, Member of the First United Methodist Church, President of the Anderson High School Marching Band Parents Association, and founding member of the Madison Avenue Little League. He was Jaycee's Man of the Year, and served as Chief Judge of the Unified Court System.
George loved spending time and vacationing with his beloved family, whom he cherished. George was also a loyal fan of Indiana University basketball and football, holding season tickets for both sports since 1947 when he was a student at IU.
George is survived by his son, Judge G. George (wife, Anne) Pancol; daughter, Deborah Marie (husband Brian) Elpers; six grandchildren, Alison Pancol, Lindsey Madinger (husband Derek), Samantha Pancol, Michael (wife Julie) Elpers, Melissa Elpers, and Eric Elpers; three great grandchildren, Michaela Garner, Dawson Garner, and Elijah Pancol; four sisters, Mary Raikos of Indianapolis, Marguerita Alder of Cincinnati, Ohio, Soteria Nicholson of Anderson and Teddy Bohnenkamp of Anderson; brother in law, Nick (Joyce) Zonakis of Columbus, Ohio, and sisters in law, Joan Zoankis of Bradenton, Florida, and Dodie Zonakis of Ft. Wayne, several nieces and nephews and special friend, Mildred Gates.
George was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Irene Tzouanakis Pancol, his parents, Gus and Penelope Pancol, sisters Ann Pancol and Sophia Campbell.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 3:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Anderson, officiated by Pastor Jeff Taylor. Burial will take place at East Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 4-8 PM at Rozelle Johnson Funeral Service and on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be given in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Association or the First United Methodist Church.
