J. D. Moreland, 90, of Tifton died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Southern Care Assisted Living. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Tift Memorial Gardens. Rev. Jim Donovan and Dr. Danny Ray will officiate with burial to follow.
Mr. Moreland was born on April 3, 1923 in Crisp County and was the son of Robert Miles Moreland and Ivey Gibson Moreland, both deceased. He was retired from Lockheed and the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office. He was a member of the Peace Officer’s Association and a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was also a Mason and had lived most of his life in Gordon County.
Mr. Moreland is survived by his wife, Vernell Phipps Moreland of Tifton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Scott and Kathy Moreland of Westmoreland, New Hampshire and Phillip Miles and Jaquetta Moreland of Thomson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl Patricia and Bobby Blackstock of Calhoun and Pam and Del Taylor of Tifton; one brother, Delmar Moreland of Lovejoy; one sister, Ivey Mae Kennedy of Marietta; five grandchildren, Timothy Moreland, DeAnn Taylor, Nicole Taylor, Drake Moreland and Duncan Moreland; one great-granddaughter, Rosie Moreland; two step-grandchildren, Billy Shae and Wendy Spooner; and two step great-grandchildren, Taylor Spooner and Leam Shae.
