Obituary

After leading a courageous life that overcame the odds, Victor Amauri Marte, a 32-year-old husband and beloved son, passed away from heart complications on Jan. 22 in Children’s Hospital in Boston. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Victor was born in the Dominican Republic with a serious and rare heart
defect. He was not expected to survive childhood. At the age of 4, his devoted mother brought Victor to live in Lawrence, Mass., and he began treatment at Children’s Hospital. He endured heart surgeries and many other medical procedures throughout his life, but he was always known for his positive attitude, sense of humor, and sweet nature.

After graduating from Lawrence High School, he enrolled at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and eventually earned a degree in computer science at
Northern Essex Community College. He was employed by Internet & Telephone LLC in Methuen, where his joyful influence on the lives of countless colleagues and customers was likened to that of George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Three years ago, Victor married his high school sweetheart and the love of
his life, Tammi Bernier Marte of Lawrence. All who knew Victor also knew that he loved Tammi since the day that he met her. During their very happy marriage, they lived in Andover and enjoyed Caribbean cruises, cooking at home, and cheering for Boston sports teams.

In addition to his loving wife, Victor is survived by his mother and father, Matilda Callahan and Erasmo Marte of Lawrence; brother and sister-in-law, Cormac and Angela Callahan of Lawrence; niece/nephew "Baby Callahan"; four sisters, Laura Marte, Mariel Marte, and Diana Mia Marte, all of New York City, and Ambar Marte of Lawrence; stepfather Shawn Callahan and his wife, Suzanne, of Haverhill; mother-in-law and father-in-law Marian and Berton Bernier of Methuen; brother-in-law Michael Bernier of Methuen; stepmother Rosa Piccini of New York City; grandmothers Celeste Lantigua of Miami and Beth (Landford) Gelt of Newburyport; grandfather and grandmother Patrick and Paula Callahan of North Conway, N.H.; uncles Ernesto Lopez of Miami and Domingo Lantigua of Lawrence; aunts Francisca Rivera and Xiomara Lopez of Miami; aunt and uncle Paula and Kevin Flynn of Newburyport, aunt and uncle Kerry and Christopher Stetson of Yarmouthport, Maine; aunts Amy and Sunny Callahan of Newburyport; and many cousins.

Family and friends will honor and celebrate Victor's life by gathering for calling hours on Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 3-7 PM at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street in Methuen. His funeral service will be held on Monday at 1:30 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the West Parish Cemetery in Andover.

The Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home is honored to serve the Marte family.
