Obituary

Frederick H. Manning, 94, of Manchester, NH, died Thursday January 23, 2014 in the Elliot Hospital in Manchester. He was born in Londonderry, NH on January 18, 1920, a son of the late William and Margaret (Bailey) Manning. A resident of Manchester for a short time, he had resided in Derry, NH since 1929. Mr. Manning graduated from Pinkerton Academy in Derry, Class of 1936 and later served in the US Navy during WWII. Mr. Manning started his banking career with the First National Bank of Derry which later became Indian Head National Bank. He retired in 1984 from Indian Head National Bank of Nashua as President after 47 years of employment. Mr. Manning served as Past President for the Pinkerton Academy Board of Trustees for 15 years, and served as Trustee Emeritus for the Board. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #3023 in Derry and was a charter member. He was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Peterson Council in Salem, NH. Mr. Manning was a communicant of St. Mark's Church in Londonderry. He was inducted into the Pinkerton Academy Hall of Fame in 1991, and has a lecture hall named in his honor on the Pinkerton campus. In addition to serving the town of Derry as past treasurer, Mr. Manning was named Derry's Citizen of the Year in 1972. He was very involved during the growing years at Pinkerton Academy, and was involved in many local civic organizations.

He is survived by his son, Dr. James B. Manning and his wife Deborah of Brookfield, NH; two daughters, Jean M. Minichiello and her husband Dr. Philip of Newton Junction, NH, and Kathleen M. Vachon and her husband Robert of Londonderry, NH, his son-in-law, Donald Babcock, Sr.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Madelene Cote of Durham, NH, and Margaret Morrison of Goffstown, NH; his brother, Robert Manning of Haverhill, MA; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Lucile (Mercure) Manning in 2012 and his daughter Janet M. Babcock in 2013.

Calling hours were held on Sunday, January 26th from 3 - 6pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry. A Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday at 11:00am in St. Mark the Evangelist Church, One South Rd., Londonderry. Following cremation, private burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Londonderry. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick Manning Scholarship (To be established), C/O Pinkerton Academy, 5 Pinkerton St., Derry, NH 03038.
