Obituary

Charles D. Stanley, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by member of his loving family on Jan. 13, 2014. Charles was born on June 29, 1925 in Weaksberry, KY to the late Alpha J. and Dovie (Goble) Stanley. Charles enlisted into the Navy at the age of 17 in 1942. He served his country proudly. He was a World War II Veteran aboard the USS BRETON CVE-23 which earned him two medals, The Pacific Medal and The World War II Victory Medal. Charles was honorably discharged in 1946. Charles was an entrepreneur who owned and operated restaurants, bars, construction and painting companies. Charles was known for his sense of humor and his telling of colorful stories, which he had many. He loved being around family, he had a passion for cooking and loved bowling. He made friends everywhere he went. He retired from Berger Painting at the age of 82. Charles is predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Lola G. (Hartzell) Stanley; his brothers Max, Donald B. and his sister Helen and her husband Thomas Lumpkins. He is survived by his brother Alpha Stanley Jr., and wife Nancy of NY; his sons Charles D. Stanley Jr. of CT, David Stanley of Springfield, Michael McCray of Springfield and Lindsey McCray and fiancée Holly Cooke of S. Hadley. His daughters Charlene Morales and husband Luis of NY, Leta (McCray) Bouse and husband Charles of Chicopee, Patti Jo (McCray) Caterson and husband Chris of Montrose, PA, Vicki (McCray) Cotton and husband Ken of Chicopee, Tammie (McCray) Vancini and her husband Michael of Springfield, Tracey (McCray) Facchini and fiancé David Abodeeb of Springfield. He leaves his grandchildren, Amanda Florek, Catherine Caterson, Michael Carter, Toria Carter, Christina Stafinski, Ryan Vancini, Marissa Vancini, David Facchini, Daniel Rice and Stephen Rice, Jasmin Stanley, David Stanley Jr., Katie Stanley, Broderick Stanley and Charlotte Lynch; his great grandchildren, Drew, Owen, Mylo, Falicity, Mackenzy, Molly, Katherine, Sebastian, Kristopher, Phoenix, Vincent, Jaxson, Horatio, Olivia, Ryan and Melodee, Penelope and Phoenix. His sister-in-laws Linda Fitzgerald and husband Gerald of Springfield, Gloria Ashline of VT, his brother-in-law Glen Hartzell of NH and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. Calling hours will be held on Tues, Jan. 21, 2014 from 4-7 pm at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee. A funeral service will be held on Wed. Jan. 22, 2014 at 12 Noon at the funeral home followed by burial in the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. A short visitation will be held at the funeral home, on the morning of the funeral from 11a.m. until time of service at Noon.
