John “Jack” Callahan, Sr., 88, of Derry, NH, died Saturday January 18, 2014 in the Pleasant Valley Nursing Center in Derry. He was born in Newton, MA on June 22, 1925, a son of the late Vincent and Margaret Callahan. John had been a resident of Derry since 2005, formerly living in Somerville, MA. He served with the Canadian Army during WWII. John had been employed in the wholesale fishing industry from 1947 - 1988. He then worked in the construction field, retiring with Majestic Construction Co. in Waltham, MA. John had been a member of the Londonderry Senior Center. He enjoyed sports and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth (LoSciuto) Callahan of Derry; three sons and their wives, John, Jr. and Christine Callahan, of Lewiston, ME, Stephen and Mira Callahan of Gorham, ME, and Daniel and Jean Callahan of Londonderry, NH; eight grandchildren, Janice, Annissa, Stephanie, Kristen, Robert, Jeffrey, Ryan, and John; eight great grandchildren; and his sister, Helen Beliveau of Medford, MA. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Karolina.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 from 4 to 8 pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 am in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Crystal Ave., Derry. The burial will be in the Pillsbury Cemetery in Londonderry in the Spring.
