Lillian (Barnett) Smith of Chelsea died on January 15, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was 79 years old. Lillian was a member of Temple Tifereth Israel in Malden for 37 years and served on their Board of Trustees. She was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Chelsea Jewish Foundation and on the Board of the Leonard Center for Living, in addition to being a volunteer in many capacities at the Cohen Florence Levine Estates Assisted Living Facility for 11 years. She was co-president of the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home Women's Auxiliary for many years and an active volunteer there for 50 years. Lillian served as PTA President of the Chelsea Hebrew Academy in the 1960s and was a charter member of the Zonta Club of Chelsea. She was a graduate of Chelsea High School class of 1952 and was co-chairperson of their reunion committee for many years.
Lillian was the beloved and dedicated wife of James for 59 years, and devoted mother of her children Howard, Sherri, Laurie, Claire and Rosie. She was the cherished grandmother of Alana, Moe, Joshua, Elizabeth, and Jared, and treasured great-grandmother of Calynn and Hannah. She was the dear aunt of several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Torf Funeral Home, Washington Ave, Chelsea, MA on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 11:00am. Burial to follow at the Chevra Kadisha Cemetery, Everett, MA. Memorial week will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Chelsea Jewish Foundation, 165 Captains Row, Chelsea, MA 02150. Lillian's family would like to give special thanks to the extraordinary doctors and nurses at Beth Israel hospital of Boston and St Joseph's hospital of Atlanta.
