Mary Nell (Core) Stiles Anders Campbell
Mary Campbell, 86 went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 13, 2014. Born in Paris AT on March 26, 1927 to Julius and Hattie Core, she had 10 siblings; Marie, Louise, Walter, Clayton, Robert, Patrick, Eleanor, Dan, Anna and J.H., Jr. Mary attended County Line High School in Ratcliff AR where she excelled in Basketball. In 1943, she married Richard Stiles and they moved to Port Hueneme CA where Richard was employed as a longshoreman loading war supplies on freighters.
Mary started working as an EAM operator in 1949 at the Port Hueneme Navy base and later as an applications programmer at Point Mugu, retiring in 1974. While at Point Mugu, she was a member of Toastmasters and a representative to the Civilian Welfare and Recreation Committee. After retirement, she was active in the restoration of the Navy Officer's Club (Bard House) at Port Hueneme.
Family was the center of Mary's life. She loved to play cards and when the grandchildren where there she taught each one how to play various card games. You would hear her say, "Did you bring your money? We're going to play cards." Besides cards, Mary enjoyed camping, fishing, crocheting and throwing parties.
While married to her second husband, Wally Anders, Mary found a new "love" - traveling, which she continued to enjoy until she could no longer do so.
While on a trip to Hawaii with current husband Churchill Campbell, she realized that the coning tower located at the submarine museum was from the USS Parche submarine that Churchill had served on in WWII, but it did not have a descriptive placard. After receiving permission from the Navy to research personnel records of all who had served aboard the submarine during the six patrols in 1944 to VJ Day, she had a plaque made identifying each with their names and rank. The plaque was dedicated ceremoniously in May 2001 with 43 family members and dignitaries from the US Department of the Navy in attendance. As a result of this accomplishment, Mary was awarded the Silver Patrick Henry Medallion for Patriotic Achievement.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Hattie Core, and brothers Clayton, Walter, and Robert Core, first husband Richard Stiles, second husband Wallace Anders, sons Michael Anders and Bruce Campbell and her eldest sister Marie Martin.
She is survived by seven children, Richard Stiles (Yvonne) Oxnard, Pamela Mayer (Paul) Ventura, Patty Conelley Billings MT, Patricia Shay (Michael) Phoenix AZ, Caprice Curtis (Steven) Charleston SC, 20 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson, plus many nieces and nephews.
