Eleanor "Joan" (Barrett) Slatky, 77, of Derry, NH passed peacefully Saturday January 11, 2014 at Pleasant View Center in Concord, NH after a brief illness. She was born in Winthrop, MA on June 1, 1936, the daughter of James and Elena Barrett. She graduated from Somerville High School, Class of 1955. She was married to the late Robert L. "Slats" Slatky, and moved to Derry to raise her family. Her greatest loves besides reading and traveling, were cooking for, and enjoying time with her family. This includes her children, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and her extended family in Winchester of over 30 whom she babysat. She was always ready for an adventure, with a smile and her fantastic sense of humor. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife of 54 years, THE BEST loving mother, adored Gram, and the truest of friends. Joan lived by these words: "It is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice"
She is survived by four children, Darlene Gianinoto and her husband Gary, Sandra Dupere and her husband Raymond, Robert L. Slatky Jr. and his wife Ann, Joseph Slatky and his wife Cristal; nine grandchildren, James A. Sponzo and his wife Katrice, Angela Perkins and her husband Keith, London Dupere, Chad Dupere, Clint Dupere, Carly Gianinoto, Erika Gianinoto, Ryan Slatky, and Olivia Slatky; and two great-grandchildren, Emmilyn Perkins and Adeline Sponzo.
Calling hours were held Wednesday, January 15th from 4 – 8pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday at 11:00am in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 26 Crystal Ave., Derry. Graveside services followed at 1:30pm in the NH Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Padre Pio Foundation of America, 463 Main St., Cromwell, CT 06416 or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01710.
