HOLDEN___Dr. Andrew Popowicz, D.D.S., 74, of Holden, formerly of Sutton, died Sunday Oct. 10 in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.
He leaves his wife of 37 years, Dr. Lorraine A. (Kroll) Popowicz, a sister, Irene A. Salkiewicz of North Grosvenordale; nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces. He was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters, Walter T. Popowicz, Dr. Charles F. Popowicz, Theodore A. Popowicz, Stephanie Wondolowski, Josephine J. Kalinowski and Janet Jablonski. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of Peter and Kataryna (Manko) Popowicz and later lived in Sutton for 30 years and has resided in Holden for 2 years.
Dr. Popowicz operated his own dental practice in Worcester for 40 years before retiring in 2000. He was a graduate of Commerce High School, Worcester Junior College and Northwestern University School of Dental Medicine.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served as an Army dentist in Germany. He then served in the Army Reserve with the 804th General Hospital Corps at Hanscom Air Force Base. Dr. Popowicz attained the rank of Colonel and was a commander responsible for Military Dental Units throughout New England.
He was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, the Quo Vadis Club, the American Dental Association and the Massachusetts Dental Society. He enjoyed farming, agriculture and woodcarving.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday Oct. 13 from HENRY-DIRSA FUNERAL HOME, 33 Ward St., Worcester with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward St., Worcester. Calling hours in the funeral home are Tuesday Oct. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
