Obituary

Roger Winthrop Campbell, Sr., 68, of Onset, died Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of Cheryl (Zeeman) Campbell since 2005 and late Jean V. (Lonergan) Campbell to whom he married in 1967 and died in 2000.

Born in Quincy on June 25, 1945, he was the son of the late Douglas L. and Gwendolyn (Campbell) Campbell.

Mr. Campbell grew up in North Quincy and moved to Stoughton where he graduated from High School in 1962. Roger was a longtime resident of Franklin until moving to Onset 5 years ago.

He worked for the Polaroid Corporation in Waltham as a mechanic for 30 years until his retirement.

Mr. Campbell gave freely of his time and was actively involved with the youth hockey programs in Franklin for more than 25 years. Diabetes research and support programs were dear to his heart and he was an active member of the “Massachusetts diabetes pump group”. Mr. Campbell was awarded a 50 year Type 1 diabetes survivor’s medal from the Joslin Clinic.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Peter Campbell and his wife Diana of Franklin and Roger Campbell, Jr. of Gilbert, AZ, a brother The Rev. Kenneth S.B. Campbell of Orleans, a step-son Shawn Walker and his fiancée Ashley of Seattle, WA and a step-daughter Claire Anastasia and her husband Owen of Westchester, NY.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Sarah, Holly, Julie, Shane, Saunder and Lilah.

He was the brother of the late Douglas L. Campbell, Jr.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 237 Pleasant St. in Franklin on Friday, January 10 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the family plot at Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin, 131 Main St. in Franklin (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com).

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings in remembrance of Roger may be sent to the Joslin Diabetes Center in his name, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
