Worcester – George W. Butler, 92, of Worcester, died on Sunday, December 29th in UMass Memorial Medical Center – Memorial Campus after an illness.
George is survived by his 3 brothers, Kenneth F. Butler and his wife Lilia of Worcester, Richard W. Butler and his wife Ruth of Holden, and Paul G. Butler of Carver, MA and nieces and nephews. Mr. Butler was born in Worcester, son of the late J. George and Bertha M. (Wilmot) Butler and is also predeceased by a sister Lorraine R. Duggan.
George went to both Saint Peter’s High School and Catholic University. He was a schoolteacher in New York for 14 years before returning to the Worcester area. Upon returning to Worcester, Mr. Butler worked for the Worcester County Sherriff’s Department under Sherriff Joseph A. Smith. While working at the Sherriff’s Department, George founded the St. Dismas School for the inmates. He later worked at the former Hahnemann Hospital until his retirement.
Mr. Butler was a member of St. George Parish in Worcester. He was installed as a Permanent Acolyte on April 17, 1994 by Bishop Timothy Harrington and Bishop Bernard Flanagan and served in that capacity for many years at St. George Church. George was also a member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and was a Eucharistic Minister at St. George Church and also at Hahnemann Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 4th at 10 AM in St. George Church 38 Brattle Street with burial to follow in Notre Dame Cemetery.
