George P. Calligandis Jr., a 57 year resident of Wakefield, entered into eternal life on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Epoch of Melrose Nursing Home in Melrose following an extended illness. He was 85 years old.
George was born in Somerville on August 10, 1928, a son of the late George P. Calligandes and Mary A. (Zefferino) Calligandes. He grew up in Cambridge where he was educated in the Cambridge Public School system and graduated from Rindge Technical High School in 1947. He enlisted into the United States Army on November 3, 1950 and served his country with courage and honor during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on November 7, 1956 with the rank of Private First Class. George worked as a printer for Andrew T. Johnson Company in Boston for over 30 years.
George is the devoted brother of Helene Purtell of Chelmsford, Theresa Caligandes of Wakefield, Alyce Suss of California and the late Mary M. Calligandes, Eloise M. Calligandes, Peter Calligandes and John Calligandes. He is the loving uncle to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend George's Funeral on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Wakefield/Melrose line followed by his Funeral Mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 10 A.M. Interment at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield. Visiting hours will be on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 5 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
