WEST SPRINGFIELD – Evelyn E. (Nassar) Stevens, 92, of West Springfield and a former longtime resident of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield was Called Safely Home on Friday, December 27, 2013. She passed into Eternal Life at her home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and all the memories she loved and treasured. She was born in New Britain, Connecticut on December 20, 1921, a beloved daughter of the late George Nassar, Sr. and Sada (Sadak) Nassar. In the 1920’s, she moved with her parents to Springfield where she was raised. She attended local schools and graduated from the High School of Commerce. Evelyn lived in Springfield for many years before moving to West Springfield in 2008. Active in her faith, Evelyn worked tirelessly for the Glory of God and was a lifelong communicant of Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church in Springfield. She had a special devotion to our Blessed Mother and was a living example of faith in action. For 20 years, she passed on the teachings of the Church to several generations as a Religious Education Instructor. Evelyn was a loving homemaker to her family. An avid baker, breads, muffins and cakes were always available when guests dropped by for a visit. Her "Wacky Cake” was by far her most delectable dessert. Friends and family never left empty handed after a visit. She gave her time and talents to many volunteer organizations. Her last years were spent in unceasing prayer for her family members both living and deceased and for her many friends and their families. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and love of her life, Raymond J. Stevens who was Called Home on February 25, 2000. They were married on September 28, 1947 at Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 52 years of happiness together. She leaves her seven devoted children, Joseph E. Stevens of Southwick, Mary Anne Shamatta and her husband, Louie Shamatta, of Atlanta, GA, Louis R. Stevens and his wife, Laura, of Russell, Paul A. Stevens and his wife, Louise, of Westfield, Mark R. Stevens and his wife, Laura, of Westfield, Michael J. Stevens of West Springfield with whom she lived and who so lovingly cared for her, and Raymond J. Stevens, Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Longmeadow; her 15 cherished grandchildren; her nine cherished great-grandchildren; her loving sister-in-law, Josephine Nassar of Westfield; and her many dear nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins, and extended members of the Stevens, Sadak and Nassar families. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving daughter-in-law, Christine Stevens; her cherished grandchildren, Sharon and Joseph Stevens; her loving brother, George Nassar; and her loving sisters, Isabelle “Betty” Mango, Cecilia Nassar and Sally LaFountain. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, December 31, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 7:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church, 375 Island Pond Road, Springfield, MA 01118. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church, 375 Island Pond Road, Springfield, MA 01118.
