Obituary

Nancy (Schaal) Soltis, 81, passed away on December 21, 2013, after a full life. She is survived by her devoted husband, Jonas, and two daughters, Susan Soltis, a high school English teacher, and Robin Soltis Davis (Atwood), a scientific editor. She will be greatly missed.

After graduating from the University of Connecticut in 1955, Nancy married Jonas F. Soltis. In conjunction with his career as a professor and scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University, and for their own pleasure, the couple traveled widely, spending time in such places as Japan, China, and Singapore, as well as visiting Europe and traveling across the United States. They spent part of their retirement enjoying golf and friends at Timber Pines in Spring Hill, FL.

Nancy also greatly enjoyed her own career as a kindergarten teacher in Teaneck, NJ for many years, where she was respected by the faculty and loved by her students. She was a life-long learner and avid reader, a whiz at the New York Times Sunday crossword, and an adventurous and excellent cook.

She enjoyed being a grandmother to Robin's children, Erin Davis Gioia (Sam), and twins Atwood Davis (Alaina) and Jennifer Davis Meis (Doug). She was a great-grandmother to Brynn Gioia, and shortly before her passing, she became a great-grandmother to Atwood Davis VI.

The family will hold a private memorial service in Pennsylvania at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind, Inc. at 6492 California Street, Brooksville, FL 34604-8403.
