Roderick W. MacDonald of Brockton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family December 17, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center. He was the loving husband of Gail M. (McCarty) MacDonald. Roderick “Rod” was born October 12, 1925 in St. Joseph, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, son of the late Roderick Angus and Catherine Ann (MacInnis) MacDonald. He came to the United States in 1953. In 1954, he began his 35 year career with Sears serving in assignments in Maine and Massachusetts before retiring in 1989.
As a young man in Canada, he played hockey and baseball. He was an avid sportsman with a particular love for fly fishing, golf, and skiing. He was a long time member of D.W. Field Golf Course. He served on the board of Old Colony United Way for many years and was a past chairman of the Mayflower Retired Services Volunteer Program. Rod was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where he served as an usher for many years.
In addition to his wife Gail, Rod is survived by his children, Catherine Creamer and her husband Joseph of South Easton; Kimberly Beals and her husband Steven of Brockton; Steven MacDonald and his wife Sharon of Burlington; Michael MacDonald and his wife Nancy of Hingham; seven grandchildren, Jason and Megan Beals, Abigail, Michael, Catherine, Holly and Lucia MacDonald; sisters Mary MacDonald McEvitt of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Sister Rebecca MacDonald of Sydney, Nova Scotia; several nieces and nephews.
Rod was predeceased by his siblings John Joseph MacDonald and Anna M. Phyllis MacDonald, late of Nova Scotia, Margaret Florence MacDonald Ross, late of Ohio, Catherine Theresa MacDonald Jaye, late of Michigan, and Sadie MacDonald Thayer, late of New Hampshire.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, (Rte 123) Brockton, Friday 5-8pm. The Funeral Procession will gather at the funeral home Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 8am for a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9am. Interment will take place in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
