EDWARD V. FITZGERALD, age 87, a Hingham resident for the past 52 years, died on Monday, Oct. 4th at the V.A. Medical Center in West Roxbury after a brief illness.Mr. Fitzgerald was born, raised and educated in Boston. He worked in the automobile business for 35 years. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, serving with the 157th Infantry Regiment of the 45th Infantry Division. Mr. Fitzgerald was a Staff Sergeant and a squad leader of a mine squad. He received The Bronze Star for action at the Anzio Beachhead in Italy and was also a Purple Heart recipient. He was one of the first American soldiers to enter and liberate the infamous concentration camp at Dachau.An avid golfer, he was a former member of the South Shore Country Club in Hingham and had a great passion for baseball and football. He also was a parishioner at St. Paul's Church in Hingham for many years. Mr. Fitzgerald was an avid reader who patronized the Hingham Public Library several times a week.He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne (Clifford) Fitzgerald of Hingham; four sons, Edward W. Fitzgerald of Hingham, Thomas P. Fitzgerald of Hull, William R. Fitzgerald and Timothy J. Fitzgerald both of Rockland, and a daughter, Ann-Marie Fitzgerald of Hingham; two sisters, Eileen Singleton of Hingham and Margaret Riley of Baltimore, MD, and 5 grandchildren. He was the grandfather of the late Christian Fitzgerald.A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct. 7th at 10 AM at St. Paul's Church, Hingham Square.Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Wednesday evening from 5-8 PM.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Hingham Public Library,66 Leavitt St., Hingham, MA 02043.The interment will be in the Hingham Cemetery.
