Frances Jane “ Fran “ ( Hurney ) Stetson a resident of Stoughton for over 55 years and current Human Resources Clerk for the Town Of Stoughton passed away after a brief illness with her children by her side on Wednesday December 11, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. She was 80 years old and the beloved wife of the late Howard E. “ Howie” Stetson. She is survived by her loving children, Frederick T. Stetson and his wife Deborah of Forestdale,MA, Brian P. Stetson and his wife Cindee of Madison, Alabama , Gary E. Stetson of Hanson, MA , Kevin J. Stetson of Stoughton,MA and Sharon A. Hutchinson and her husband Lynn Paul of Lakeville,MA. Other survivors include her four grandchildren, Adam K. Stetson, Meghan E. Stetson, Erin A. Stetson, Lindsey R. Finlay and several nieces, nephews and other family members. She was also a sister to the late Rita E. Prewitt and husband Raymond, Virginia B. Ryan and husband George and Marie E. Gallagher and husband Francis.
Originally from Dorchester, Fran moved to Stoughton in the early 1960’s. She was born on January 11, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts and was a beloved daughter to the late Francis J. and Rita E. (Fitzsimmons) Hurney. She attended Boston Public Schools and was a graduate of the Jeremiah E. Burke High School. She attended and was a communicant of The Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton.
Mrs. Stetson was employed and served the Town Of Stoughton for over twenty-five years. She worked as a Billing Clerk for the Stoughton Fire Department, an Assistant Clerk in the Town Clerk’s Office, an Account’s Payable Clerk in the Town Accountant’s Office, and was also a Telephone Receptionist at the main entrance to Stoughton Town Hall. She was also a 9 year member of the Committee on Finance and Taxation where she served as the department’s Secretary from 1983-1988.
Fran was an elected Precinct 8 Stoughton Town Meeting Representative for over 35 years and served as Precinct Chairwoman for over 20 years. She was also a dedicated Poll worker and volunteered countless hours with both the Stoughton Community Event’s Committee and the Sherm’s Auto body Annual Blood Drive for Children’s Hospital. In her spare time, Fran enjoyed reading, traveling and vacationing on the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
When her children were younger, both Fran and her late husband Howie were very dedicated and active leaders of the Stoughton Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts Pack # 57 and Boy Scout Troop # 57 where Mrs. Stetson served as past Treasurer.
Visiting hours to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend will be held on Sunday December 15, 2013 from 4 P.M. – 8 P.M. in the Sheehan, Lowe & Powers Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton. Cremation to follow. NOTE: Her graveside memorial service and interment of Cremains will be held at a later date in the Spring.
