Obituary

Raymond J. Shea, 76, of Derry, NH, died Tuesday December 10, 2013. He was born in Boston, MA on March 21, 1937, a son of the late Brendan and Hilda (Kavanaugh) Shea. Ray was a resident of Derry for more than 25 years, formerly living in Boston, Cape Cod, and New Orleans. He was a retired US Coast Guard veteran serving from 1954 to 1974, including several tours on the icebreaker USCGC Eastwind in Operation Deep Freeze, and in later years was a merchant seaman. He circumnavigated the globe, toured the Arctic and the Antarctic, and was more at home on the sea than on land. He was a member of the American Legion Lester Chase Post #9 in Derry.
He is survived by two sons, Raymond J. Shea of Austin, TX, and William D. Shea of Baton Rouge, LA; daughter-in-law Rhonda Shea of Baton Rouge, LA; four grandchildren, Cassidy, Liam, Lauren, and Erin; his sister, Rita James of Kingston, MA; his brother, Lester Shea of Lynn Haven, FL; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brothers Brendan and Edward.
Following cremation, he will be interred at sea. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Coast Guard Mutual Assistance. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry is assisting the family with arrangements.
