Marie J. (McCarthy) Souza, age 88, of Mansfield passed away peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2013 at the Epoch Senior Healthcare in Norton.
She was the beloved wife of the late Orlando D. “John” Souza to whom she was wed for over 57 years at the time of his death on January 10, 2007.
Born in Somerville, MA on September 13, 1925, she was a loving daughter of the late Cornelius, Sr. and Helen (McFadden) McCarthy. She grew up in Medford and was a 1943 graduate of Medford High School.
A resident of Mansfield for the past 64 years, Mrs. Souza had been employed in the banking industry and retired as an Assistant Manager at the Webster Bank in Mansfield.
Marie was an active communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield where she was also a member of the Catholic Women’s Club. She was also volunteered her time at the Mansfield Senior Center and for the West Side Benevolent Circle in Mansfield.
Marie’s family was a very important part of her life and she especially loved spending time with her adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she was so proud of. Mrs. Souza also enjoyed the weekly get-togethers, playing card games, with her close circle of friends.
She is survived by her devoted children, Jack Souza and his wife Carole of Mansfield, Bob Souza and his wife Pat of Mansfield, Tom Souza and his wife Sylvie of Wellesley, Paul Souza and his wife Jill of Indiana, and Janet Moreshead and her husband Dan of Mansfield. She was the dear sister of Charles McCarthy and his wife Helen of Medford and the late Cornelius McCarthy, Jr., Patricia Bragalone and Ruth Fitchorn. Mrs. Souza is also survived by her cherished 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Her funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 27th at 11:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, November 26th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
In lieu of flowers, Marie’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the West Side Benevolent Circle, P.O. Box 506, Mansfield, MA 02048.
