Obituary

Louis J. Savarino passed away on November 13, 2013 at home with his loving wife, Joan (Monaghan) by his side. He was 82 years old.
Born and raised in Malden, Lou was the son of the late Giorgio and Elena Savarino. He entered the U.S. Navy and served from 1951 to 1953, including time on the USS Warrington during the Korean War. He returned and spent time as a mate on tugboats on the Mississippi River before resettling in Malden. Upon his return to Greater Boston, Lou joined the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, working in the tile trade. He was a co-founder of the Florence Marble and Tile, Co. in 1967 and served as president of the company for many years. He took pride in tile projects small and large, including numerous colleges, hotels and office buildings in New England. He and Joan raised their four children in Malden and were proud that each of their children earned college diplomas. Lou and Joan enjoyed spending summer time on Lake Winnipesaukee at Lake Shore Park in Gilford, NH.
Along with his wife of 58 years, Lou is survived by his four children Laurie Savarino of Malden, Stephen Savarino and his wife Charlotte of Maryland, Tami Hancock and her husband John of Lexington and Louis Savarino Jr. and his wife Christine of Lexington. He was the dear brother of Rita Anderson, Dorothy Cannata, Jean Bonito, Anna Travis and the late Eleanor Fermano, Antonio Bernardini, Beatrice Barrett and Vincent Savarino. Lou was the cherished grandfather of Jason, Alyssa, and Nicholas Savarino, Elaina, Siena and Sophia Hancock and Louis Savarino III. He was the great-grandfather of Zachary, Daiven and Kason Savarino. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held from the A. J. Spadafora Funeral Home, 865 Main Street, Malden on Monday, November 18th at 9:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main Street, Wakefield at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours are Sunday, November 17th from 2-6 p.m. Interment will be in Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Lou’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
