Obituary

FRAMINGHAM: Lawrence P. Mahoney, age 79, a longtime Framingham resident and retired Principal Engineer with Raytheon, died on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at the Wayland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the devoted husband of Anne E. (Thompson) Mahoney for the past 56 years.

Born in Boston, he was a son of the late Patrick J. and Marcella (Cronin) Mahoney. He was raised and educated in Stoughton and went on to join the ROTC, earning a degree in Engineering from Tufts University. He then entered the US Navy as an Ensign and served in Seattle. Lawrence and Anne met and married in Seattle, and they came east in 1956 at the conclusion of his active duty period. He continued with the Naval Reserves until his retirement as a Lieutenant in 1977. He was Executive Officer of the Naval Research Unit at M.I.T. when he retired.

The Mahoney’s settled in Framingham in 1961, and Lawrence started his career as an engineer with Raytheon. He had worked in their Wayland and Sudbury facilities by day and in the evenings earned a Master of Science in Engineering through Northeastern University. During his time at Raytheon, Larry consulted for the Assistant Secretary of Defense and received letters of recognition for these efforts. He held the position of Principal Engineer at the time of his retirement in 1994.

Lawrence was President of the Boston Chapter of the International Institute of Connector and Interconnection Technology (IICIT) from 1979 to 1994. In 1995 he became International President of the IICIT serving until the end of his term in 1998.

Larry and Anne enjoyed winters on Longboat Key in Florida, where he particularly enjoyed flats fishing. He loved to fix objects around his home and had a green thumb when it came to gardening. When Larry had the luxury of spare time, he could often be found reading or watching a Red Sox or Patriots game.

He is survived by Anne; his loving daughter, Lisa A. Snow and her husband Patrick of Hudson; his much-loved granddaughter, Katherine A. Snow, to whom he was known as “Popi”; three brothers, Paul Mahoney, MD, and his wife Audrey of Augusta, GA, William Mahoney of Southwest Harbor, ME, and Joseph Mahoney, PhD, and his wife Aline, of Kennebunk, ME; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
