New Bedford – Betty Jean (Haskell) Soares, 60, of Port St. Lucie, Florida died after a brief illness at St. Luke’s Hospital on September 27, 2004. She was the wife of Fernando G. Soares.
Mrs. Soares was born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Rescome F. and Myrtle E. (Brailey) Haskell, and resided in the greater New Bedford area most of her life, living the past 10 years in Florida. She was a former member of the Acushnet-Wesley United Methodist Church, Acushnet. Her greatest love was her family.
In addition to her widower, she is survived by a daughter: Joanne J. Rezendes of New Bedford; 2 sons: Anthony R. Soares and Fernando G. Soares, Jr. both of Port St. Lucie, FL; 3 sisters: Frances E. Cunha of Acushnet, Myrtle E.L. “Linda” Luiz of New Bedford and Linda M. Longo of Port St. Lucie, FL; 4 brothers: George C. Haskell of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Rescome F. Haskell, Jr. of Acushnet, Robert H. Haskell of New Bedford and Daniel C. Haskell of New Bedford; 5 grandchildren: Daniel Spearin of Newport, RI, Peter Spearin of Newport, RI, Crystal Soares of Port St. Lucie, FL, Anthony R. Soares, Jr. of Port St. Lucie, FL and Fernando G. Soares III of Port St. Lucie, FL; 2 Godchildren: Mary Jane Luiz and Kelly Luiz both of New Bedford; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral service on Thursday, September 30, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Church of the Nazarene, 764 Hathaway Road, New Bedford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family to be used according to their wishes.
