Gilbert Weiley Sullivan, age 90, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS. He was born June 21, 1923 in New Albany, MS to the late Benjamin Leander and Olive Williams Sullivan. During WWII Gilbert was a Sergeant in the United States Army, working as a lineman, telephone and telegraph specialist in China, Central Burma and India. He was awarded the APTO medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award and the WWII Victory Medal. Gilbert retired as a riverboat mechanic and enjoyed working on sewing machines and lawn mowers. He loved researching genealogy and spending time with family and friends. Gilbert was a member of Elam Baptist Church in Coffeeville, MS.
Visitation is planned for Wednesday, November 6, 2013 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 2:00 pm in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks. Burial will be in the Elam Baptist Church Cemetery in Coffeeville, MS with Scott Ingram, James E. Hughes, Doug Hughes, Lonnie Chrestman, Ralph Byford, Ben Harrison, Tim Story and Marshall Earl Jackson serving as pallbearers.
Gilbert is survived by his daughter, Joan Hughes (James) of Waverly, KS; two sons, Bobby Gene Sullivan (Cathy) of Hemet, CA and Toby Sullivan; one step-son, Robert Branscome of New Bern, NC; eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Whitehead Sullivan.
