Obituary

NATICK, MA: Winifred (Loeb) Saltzman, age 101, entered into rest early Wednesday morning, October 30, 2013, at Whitney Place in Natick, her home for the past ten years. She was the devoted wife of J. Bernard Saltzman, who died in 1978, and the longtime companion of the late Merton Young.

Born, raised and educated in Passaic, Winifred was a daughter of Harry and Dorothy (Weissman) Loeb. She continued her education, earning a Baccalaureate of Arts at Cornell University. She married Bernard in 1935, and the couple made their home in Passaic.

Winifred worked tirelessly in the years following the war helping refugees from the holocaust settle and get acclimated to life in New Jersey. She devoted her life to caring for others, first and foremost her husband and son, and in later years, her sons own family. Very active in the Passaic community, Winifred was presented a citizenship award by the Jewish Community in recognition of her founding Guidance Guild Nursery School in Passaic. She moved north to be near her son in 1990, and in addition to enjoying her family, became a great fan of the Boston Red Sox.

She is survived by her son, Peter R. Saltzman, MD, and his wife Betty; her sister, Norma Ehrenberg of Natick; her grandsons, Mark and his wife Andrea of Cambridge, MA, Matthew and his wife Jeeseon of Columbus, OH, and Daniel and his wife Jennifer of Brookline, MA; and her great-grandchildren, Jonah, Eli, Noah, Owen, Lucy, and Ivy.

Winifred’s family will accompany her privately to see her laid to rest beside her husband at King Solomon Memorial Park in Clifton.
