Obituary

WAYLAND: Edith S. (Hamm) Callanan, 92, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, October 27, 2013 following a period of declining health.
She was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada on February 26, 1921 the daughter of the late Charles D. Hamm and Margaret L. (Owen) Hamm.
She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Joseph A. Callanan who died on September 24, 2003.
Edith is survived by her nieces and nephews - Kathleen A. MacLaren of Ft. McCoy, FL; Walter Campbell; Mary McKenna; Hugh Callistus Campbell; L. Brendan Campbell and Edie Pineau all of P.E.I., Canada; John G. Hamn of Whitman, Robert J. Hamn of Pembroke and Daniel C. Hamn of Rockland. She was the sister of the late Robert Hamn and Margaret Campbell and aunt of the late Charles Campbell and Francis Campbell. She is also survived by several grand-nieces and nephews and great grand-nieces and nephews.
Edith came to the Boston area at the age of 7. She was educated in the United States and attended The Katherine Gibbs School in Boston. On August 14, 1943 she married Joe Callanan and they resided in New York, Washington, D.C., Waterford, CT and moved to Wayland 37 years ago. In her earlier years, Edith was a Clerk/Typist with Dennison Mfg. in New York. She was an accomplished seamstress, an avid reader, enjoyed playing bridge at the Wayland Senior Center and with her card group at the Cochituate Apartments where she has resided for several years. She and her husband Joe were devoted to each other and loved to spend time canoeing and kayaking on Dudley Pond in Cochituate. They enjoyed the seasonal views from their Simpson Road residence. She also delighted in playing ping pong, biking and had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit.
A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at 11:00 am at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), CochituateVillage, Wayland.
Interment will be held at a later date beside her husband Joe at the National Cemetery in Bourne.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Edith’s memory may be sent to Wayside Hospice, 266 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778 or any organization that benefits breast cancer research.
